You Don't Need Thousands of Dollars of Microphones! Budget vs. Professional Microphones
One of the things I’m a huge proponent of is working with what you have, and not letting that limit your creativity. In the music world, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the “if I just had that new piece of gear, things would sound SO much better” mentality, and that goes double if you’re thinking of recording equipment!
Having worked in music retail for years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have the chance to test out lots of equipment, and give real-world tests to a lot of the claims and theories people talk about. Microphones are a fun thing to compare, and find out if a mic selling for ten times as much actually sounds ten times better. Since recording a drum set involves multiple microphones, there are all kinds of combinations you can use to capture a great sound, whether using pro microphones, cheaper ones, or a combination of both.
I made this video a short while ago comparing the two setups, and the results are pretty interesting. Some microphones will undoubtedly sound better than others, but that shouldn’t stop you from recording a good sound. Give it a watch and let me know what you think!
